TENSE
We are all familiar with the concept of time. We know the flow of time is continuous and unending. For our convenience, we have divided it broadly into three periods: The Past, The
Present, The Future.
The past is the period of time that has gone by, The Present is the period of time that is with us now and the future is yet to come. In other word, the period of time before “now” is past, the present is the period of time that is with us “Now” and the period of time after Now is the future.
English verb have only two tenses- the present tense and the past tense . the main verb do, go, take, etc. are used to independently in the form of DO/DOES and did, go/goes and went, takes /takes and took. Etc. to denote actions events or states of the present time and past time.
The Present Tense
The present Simple Tense:
We usually use present simple tense when we talk about the present time or the future time actions, events, states
Use/Example
1.
a) I go to school everyday.
b) My friends usually comes with me.
c) We often reach the school before time.
d) Sometimes we get there late.
In the above sentences, we use present simple tense of the verb to talk about the things that we do again and again as a habit. we use adverb like “Always”, Often, usually, sometimes, never. |

2.
a) The sun rises in the east.
b) Tiger live in forest.
c) Spring comes after winter.
d) Light travel faster than sound.
We use present simple tense of the verb to talk about laws of the nature, general and scientific truths. |

a) I am hungry .
b) I study at a school near my village.
c) Bhubaneswar is the capital of odisha.
d) My father work in a bank.
We use the present simple tense of the verb to talk about the present or permanent state or fact. |

In the above sentences, present tense of the verbs has been used to indicate actions taking place at the moment of giving commentaries . while giving running commentaries , we use present simple tense of the verb . |

We use present simple tense when we talk about a planned future action or a future action that takes place as a part of the fixed programme or time table.

Present Progressive tense
The present Progressive Tense:
We use the present progressive form of a verb for an action or a situation which is going on now. It is an incomplete action at present, which began at some time before now, going on at the moment of speaking and will continue till some point of time in future and then be completed.

In the present progressive tense of the verb there is a auxiliary “B” verb followed by the ing form of the main verb. The form of the “B” auxiliary depends on the subject.

1.
a) Look, Sabita is getting into bus.
b) My son is now entering the examination hall.
We generally use the present progressive for a present time action of a brief duration. |

In the above sentences, present progressive has been used to indicate actions that started at some point of time before now, continuing at present and will end at some point of time after now. |

We use present progressive when we talk about something unpleasant creating feeling of anger, irritation, vexations etc. in such situations we use the adverb always, for ever, constantly, etc. |
